Police are Often First Responders to Mental Health Crises, But Tragedies are Prompting Change

If you call 911 when someone is having a mental health crisis, uniformed police–not medical professionals–are likely to show up in squad cars, mars lights blazing–a scary situation even on a good day.

“Let’s be clear about how poorly this situation works.”

Many cities are slowly, slowly moving toward shifting their response to one of compassion and medical care.
